We finally really did it… damn you! Damn you all to hell!
It may always have been foretold by the sacred scrolls but it took a new chapter in the long and storied history of the Apes franchise for us to finally get to a retrospective episode. Your hosts are again joined by a special guest to discuss all (now) 7 installments of the Planet of the Apes films from the undeniable 1968 classic through to the impressive 2011 Rise of the Planet of the Apes.
The original 5 chapter series of films attempted to stretch beyond the confines of their B-movie roots but whether they were ultimately successful is a discussed at length. The themes tackled in the films include racial allegories, anti-slavery, anti-war messages, inequalities in society’s class structure, ethics of science, ethics of animal treatment, allegories for man’s treatment of man… and the list goes on. The concepts are admirable – the execution? Well…
So rather than get mired in the minutia of factoids and trivia, the approach in the show is to reminisce about the films and what each of us perceive the strengths and weaknesses to be. Any proper retrospective of the subject must include the short lived live action and animated television series as well as the Tim Burton misfire(?) re-imagining from 2001. And of course… Rise! A surprising film that re-invigorates what many considered a dead property.
Somewhere in the Universe, there has to be something better than man. Has to be!

Great episode yet again, guys. Just to let you know, I for one, really appreciated the Game of Thrones and Harry Potter episodes. While I still have no interest in Harry Potter, the fact that they get progressively darker helped possibly open the door somewhere down the line when they’re all on DVD. And thought I have to see any episodes of Game of Thrones, your reviews and commentary on the season solidified my interest. I’m eagerly anticipating it’s release on DVD.
Thanks for the great shows, guys. Keep it up.
I gotta admitt it,the new Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes ROCKED! I really didn’t wanna like this especially after Tim Burton’s Travesty that is the 2001 “Apes” but I can’t begin to tell you where this all came together for me,It’s just the attention to detail in the story that made this work.Listen the writers flawlessly crafted the script so that this film can connect up perfectly to the original… (1968) version as a distant prequel.See the events shown in this film are mentioned various times through out the original and the sequels, Rise of the apes even mentions Col. George Taylor’s spaceship The Icarus being launched on a Mars exploaration then later a headline reads “Icarus Lost In Space” As far as the CGI FX again I feared the worst and yet ALL the apes in this COULD ACTUALLY EMOTE!!! Ceaser of course being the best and most expressive.Course you don’t have to been a Planet Of The Apes Fan as I am to enjoy this film on it’s own merits BUT being so in to the originals, just makes me appreciate the lil’ easter eggs that are there for the hardcore fans such as the name of a Gorilla is “Buck” that’s paying homage to Actor Buck Kartalian who played a Gorilla soldier in a couple of the originals or The Ape named “Bright Eyes” That is the nickname the apes give Charlton Heston’s Character in the first film. But again NOT knowing this stuff won’t impede your viewing in the least!
By the way,THANK YOU I request this episode awhile back!
Great show, you guys! Before this episode, I admit to knowing next to nothing about the Planet of the Apes franchise beyond the first movie and the Tim Burton film (which, incidentally, I kind of like…but in my defense, it came out when I was 13, and I wasn’t thinking about much back then beyond “Hehe Mark Wahlberg is hot.” I know better now.) Now I’m making it a goal to seek out all the films. By the way, don’t let the haters get you down about the Harry Potter/Game of Thrones/non horror specific episodes. I always listen to them anyway, even if I am unfamiliar with the subject. The conversation amongst you all makes it a great listen anyway.
