Episode 226 – When Horror Gets Deep

Cinema has the power to inform, soothe, inspire – terrify (of course) – and divert from our daily tediums. Seldom is this full gamut of possibilities explored so much as they are in art house cinema. Very much in parallel to the horror genre, art house films often find their origins in productions of limited means, where stories told are often more exploratory, and exposing than that mainstream cinema.

It seems there can be a considerable divide between the connoisseurs of art films, and lovers of genre movies. Perhaps we don’t get it? Is it possible we’re not open-minded enough to accept a cinematic experience so beyond the boundaries of our comfort zones that we inadvertently close our minds to the experience that is an art house film? …and maybe there is just a lot of crap out there. Horror has met with art house successfully (Cronenberg, Lynch, Kubrick) and UNSUCCESSFULLY (Cronenberg, Lynch, Kubrick) in the past, and we’d like to think that most horror and genre fans are open to alternative film experiences.

In this week’s show, we ed take a look at art house cinema, and share some thoughts on recent (The Skin I Live In) and classic (Videodrome, etc) entries in this milieu. It makes for heady conversation, but in classic HETC style. As always, there’s loads more to be found within the audio landscape that awaits, including a truly bizarre Schlock Corner and discussions on some recent viewings (The Devil Inside, Phase 7, Blood Curse, Hugo and more).

Give us a listen and get ready for a truly surreal experience as we explore the human condition in its basest form. Actually, that’s not true… we just didn’t know how to end the synopsis (there’s a tease on our reaction the ending of The Devil Inside)

“Art”:

Episode 225 – 2011 in Review

We raise a cup of kindness… er, goulishness yet —- for auld lang syne!

2011, the year that was is the main focus of this week’s episode. We reflect upon our favorite (and not so favorite) horror flicks and series of the year gone by and take a peek at some of the offerings in 2012.

It was a year that saw Wes Craven back in form with Scream 4, Guillermo Del Toro reminded us why we should Be Afraid of the Dark, and enlightened us as to what awful things happened at that Norwegian camp – but it was the hidden gems like Stakeland that really defined the year. In addition to a multitude of title revisits and a nice selection of under the radar choices that slipped by we offer up a few surprises and laughs along the way with coverage of several recent watches including Chillerama, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, TinTin, Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, MI4, and lots more (such as Ted’s most recent scar inflicted by Jack Ketchum: The Woman). And what were ours #1 picks of the year? Well, you’ll just have to tune in and find out.

2012 is now upon us… according to some the change in the Mayan calendar may mark the end of civilization as we know it. Are you ready to survive the coming apocalypse? Of course you are – horror films taught us everything we ever need to know about surviving Armageddon… right?

Broadcasting right up until the end – enjoy the years first Horror Etc podcast!

Episode 224 – Just Jeff

And now for something a little different. It’s well documented that we are always eager to receive correspondence from the listeners and value the thoughts and comments sent our way. The following serves as an addendum to our last voicemail feedback episode featuring one listener in particular – Jeff in SF. With multiple calls sent in covering a variety of topics we made the decision to release this bonus stand alone show focused specifically on responding to these messages. Topics include The Walking Dead, Stephen King, The Thing 2011, the effect of nostalgia on our interpretation of modern films, the slasher genre and of course road movies in all their rubber burning glory.

We hope you enjoy this one-off feedback show and encourage everyone to participate in the discussion as well, because you never know when you may be the focus of a future podcast.

Episode 223 – Dexter (Season 6)

I am a Father, a Son, a serial killer.

Dexter returns with a season soaked in religious themes, political maneuvering, intimacy issues… and a whole lot of blood. Season 6 offered up the Doomsday Killer(s) as the central antagonist which opened the door for some spectacular tableau kills but did the focus on religious belief and the allegory of Dexter’s conscience get a little overbearing? That’s what we are here to discuss.

We have Quinn spiraling out of control, LaGuerta getting on everyone’s nerves, an intriguing and mysterious intern who is sure to lead us places next season, the return of Rudy/Brian, a cool new addition to homicide from Chicago, and what on earth are they doing to Deb? With the endgame now set for the series we take the opportunity to pitch out some theories on how and where this will all go before we’re done in our most unstructured Dexter recap show (but perhaps the strongest as well).

So hang up the plastic and don a smock as we return to the world of our favorite serial killer Dexter Morgan, a world that has been rocked by a final reveal scene that will change everything.

Episode 222 – Christmas Spectacular ’11

Merry Christmas F**kers!
Twas the podcast before Christmas, and all through the land…
the ghouls were celebrating, as only Horror Etc can!

Join us for our FIFTH ANNUAL Christmas edition of the podcast as we ring in the season with our own special sort of holiday cheer. As always we have some X-mas themed titles to discuss including Finland’s export Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale, the feature length film based upon the viral short, followed by another Scandinavian twist on the season’s fare Sint (or Saint, or Saint Nick). This Netherlands slasher comedy proved very entertaining (and a little educational).

The video nasties marathon marches on with a Canucksploitation instalment Visiting Hours (thanks to Michael for the cool nasties bumper), and the mini-budget 80’s slasher Intruder is thrown in just for fun. Some Argento talk gets kicked off by a sneak peak at his new 3D Dracula adaptation and of course the tradition of our annual gift exchange is back. To wrap things up this episode concludes with a special reading of Dickens’ A Christmas Carol performed by Tony.

We hope you enjoy this yuletide installment and wish you and yours a merry, safe and ghoulish holiday season this year.

Episode 221 – From The Hip 16

We know one thing for certain… it’s always fun to shoot from the hip. In our latest installment of the long running series of shows that really throw a net over everything on our minds when it comes to genre talk we really did keep things fast and loose.

A sampling of the subjects covered include holiday season woes, catching up with the latest season of Dexter, a massive commitment to Breaking Bad (four seasons consumed in just over a week ?!), one more diatribe on digital distribution, the wonders of Blu Ray, and thoughts on several recently seen films: modern rubber suit monster movie Creature (2011), Brit horror comedy Attack the Block(2011), blaxploitation zombie flick Sugar Hill (1974), unseen telefilm from UPN and found footage predecessor Alien Abduction: Incident in Lake County (1998), and a return to the video nasties with the nunsploitation classic Killer Nun (1979).

All this and a whole lot more as we truly lived up to the spirit of the From The Hip format. Schlock corner features William Shatner (maybe it would be more meaningful to mention when it doesn’t), this time with Shatner vs. Carrie Fisher.

Episode 220 -You Have (voice)Mail

Time again to open the door and welcome in the feedback. Long overdue and oft promised, we finally sat down to respond to many of the questions and comments that all of you have sent our way. The best part of our feedback episodes is the opportunity it gives us to really spread out over a wide range of discussion topics.

A sampling of the subject matter ahead includes thoughts on rooting for the bad guy, the value of docu-fiction paranormal investigator TV shows, how best to tackle the order of the Star Wars franchise, some new horror videogame recommendations, Hammer Horror, Vincent Price, The Thing (2011), The Incredible Shrinking Man, Lucky McKee, Shirley Jackson, Tombs of the Blind Dead, shark horror, video nasties and of course… censorship. These topics and many more made for a fun and diverse show that again showcases the importance and value of participating in the podcast. Thanks again to all for joining us and please keep the voicemails coming.

There were some further topics sprinkled in for flavor besides the pre-holiday rage on display which included the Hunger Games trailer posted below.

Episode 219 – The Walking Dead (comic talk)

Once more we return to the zompocalypse world of The Walking Dead. We have devoted an episode to season one of the AMC adaptation previously but this time it’s a wall to wall exploration of the storyline that has unfolded since 2003 from issue 1 of the comic book to present.

Special guest host Mindy sits in to discuss the timeline, plot twists, underlying themes and jaw-dropping shock moments of the series and share thoughts on how the television version has lived up thus far to the original concept. There are spoilers! The intention here was to have a conversion re-living the story of The Walking Dead to date to share with those who have followed the comic series, however the speculations and reveals of what lies ahead of the TV series cannot be confirmed as spoilers thanks to the twists the writers have taken so far. So fair warning to those who have only experienced the show, but we do feel the plot twists are as likely to not happen as being spoiled.

A compare and contrast of the comic to show is done but focused primarily on the characters of the story and how they differ, as well as the intriguing new characters introduced. It’s an open floor discussion of TWD that we hope infects you with our passion for this great series. Huge thanks to Mindy for making this show happen.

Episode 218 – Bride of Monochrome

So there we were, reminiscing about some favorite B&W classics when we decided to throw on a DVD and do an impromptu commentary. The Bride of Frankenstein is such a widely beloved installment in the Universal canon that we felt it would be an ideal choice to serve as the backdrop to a discussion on the films that have stood the test of time and remain effective and inspiring today.

Classic B&W films may have a specific fan appeal but in the course of the running time we consider what elements of the filmmaking/storytelling work and why, the limitations of technology that increase the viewers appreciation of the accomplishments achieved, the foundations laid down upon which the entire genre has evolved, and much more. In the end however it largely became a declaration of our love for The Bride of Frankenstein (and yes, we do realize it was made in 1935, not 1932).

In an effort to balance out all the praise, we devoted schlock corner this week to a segment of the greatest unintentional movie scenes – a collection of crap to help us distinguish between that which may suffer from the passage of time and that which was dud on arrival.

Episode 217 – The Devil Walks Among Us

No incantations, rituals or sacrifices were required for us to conjure up some evil this week as we revisit the subject of devilish horror. In the long ago past we had an episode called Battles with the Devil however the subgenre continues unabated so we took up the fight once again.

The genesis of our topic came from a recent viewing of Rosemary’s Baby which led the way to checking out new installments in the possession/exorcism/demonic presence realm as well some re-watches of a few tried and true classics. We open the floor on considering why the subject has such a widespread appeal and effect, question why we are drawn to the material and ponder the power of malevolent forces as the skies open up and hail begins to fall as we start recording!

Titles discussed include The Dunwich Horror, Horror Hotel, The Possession of Emma Evans, The Possession of David O’Reilly, Incubus, The Seventh Victim, 11-11-11, To the Devil a Daughter, The Gathering and of course Rosemary’s Baby. Unfortunately several of our picks fell short of instant classic quality but Polanski’s phenomenal exploration of psychological horror made the whole exercise worthwhile.

So clear the floor, draw up some glyphs and light the candles… it’s time for another Battle with the Devil!

Note: Spoilers for The Possession of Emma Evans (41:28-43:55) and The Possession of David O’Reilly (50:34-52:53)
